Scald + The Seer present: Plunge

Plunge is a side project from Scald, where Combat Recordings boss Stormfield explores working with live musicians and performers. Formed in 2014 with an album on Berlin's Holotone Music, Scald have also remixed Fret (Mick Harris), 2020 sees this new EP as their 2nd release on Combat.

Plunge is a long audiovisual performance exclusively streamed via Chaos Theory Music, later mastered for release. Created under lockdown, the prolonged hibernation allowed learning and application of new studio techniques and gaming engine, with the aim of re-creating a virtual performance "stage" in which the music was performed. This EP involves improvisations from "mystical anarcho-feminist" The Seer on vocals, Derek Szeto (Stormfield) on Pipe synth, Liam Noonan (Swarmm) on violin, Joe Zeitlin (Tehkla) on Cello and Eden Grey on piano, the project snowballed into an intense 24 minute video jungle-violin-ambient piece, reinforced with two brutal remixes from UKAEA and Force Majeure, to sit among the Combat catalogue.

lyrics

Plunge is based loosely on a Seer piece called "Bluebeard"

I dipped my toes
In the icy waters of your heart
The muddy waters of the moat
You built around this fortress
With the heaviest bricks and mortar
I dipped my toes
In the boiling broth
Cooking on the hob
In a man-size cauldron
Remember when we lived in a hut made of candy
You kept me in a cage
And waited for sometime to fatten me up
While whispering sweet melodies to me
Full of sugar and animal fat
Everyday you checked my little finger
The size of the smallest bone
And fragile like a chicken shop’s
I am dipping my toes
In a pool of blood
The blood I spat out
As I pulled my teeth out One by one
As I pulled my hair out
And tided it into knots
Braided like the main
Of a prize winning mare
You wore around your neck
Like a string of pearls
The insides of my guts.
I am dipping my toes
In the raging waves
That slap me in the face
As I slowly move ahead
Far deep into the horizon
With not a hope in hell
And my pockets full of stones.
